Common questions
Do I need any acting experience?
No. The workshop is built so that a complete beginner and a working performer can stand in the same circle and both find the work demanding. Most people who come have never been on a stage.
How physically hard is it?
The days begin with Kalari-based movement — stretches, footwork, low stances and breathing — and you work barefoot on the floor throughout. You do not need to be an athlete, but expect to sweat. Tell us in advance about any injury or condition and the work will be adapted.
Is the workshop in Malayalam or English?
Both. Instruction moves between the two depending on the group, and you are welcome to perform your scene or monologue in either language.
Do I have to perform in front of an audience?
Yes — the fourth day ends with a performance built by the whole group and shown to an invited audience, and every participant presents a monologue to the room. This is the point of the four days, not an optional extra.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. The Act Cafe issues a certificate of participation on completion of the workshop and the final performance. There is no written examination — you are assessed on participation and on the work you show.
What should I wear?
Loose clothing you can move, stretch and sit on the floor in, and a change of clothes. Bring a towel and a water bottle. The whole workshop is done barefoot.
